Shimba Hills National Reserve

Shimba Hills National Reserve

Shimba Hills National Reserve is located 50Km away from Mombasa city and only a few kilometers from Diani Beach. The Reserve consists of extensively hilly landscape of 320 square kilometers. This park, the Shimba Hills National Reserve, is highly recommendable for day safari trips from the beach hotels along the coast.  From heights of up to 450 meters you can enjoy fantastic views over both the Shimba Hills, which Ernest Hemingway described as “The Green Hills of Africa" as well as to the Indian Ocean.

A famous characteristic of this National Park is the presence of the rare Sable antelope.  In addition, one can find giraffes, buffalo, elephants, antelope, zebras, and some kinds of apes as well as the hard-to-observe leopards of the Shimba Hills.  A funny fact is that through the rise of the African elephant population and resulting problems, authorities started a relocation program for elephants to the giant Tsavo East National Park.
